Educational android app for children to learn science - with a leading NGO

One of the many educational needs of children in India is a sound understanding of scientific principles. While children from high-income communities have access to the latest in scientific thinking taught in the best environments, children from low-income communities are left behind due to a lack of teachers who can teach well and due to a lack of science equipment and infrastructure in schools. The government of India operates close to 700,000 schools across India. In most of these schools if the science equipment exists, it is kept firmly under lock and key.

Firefish partnered with a leading NGO to release an educational app on the android platform for children. The app teaches basic scientific principles by referring to household items. The app teaches children in a game environment to maximize children's learning by holding their interest. The NGO's staff provided initial content and game design. Firefish built the app along with generating all the content.

Firefish is developing one complete line of operations to cater to this humongous educational requirement.

Social networking for educators - with NGO Pratham

Educators in India operate largely alone. There is little opportunity to interact with other educators and share experiences. There is no forum for teachers to come together and discuss best practices or motivate each other. Over the lifetime of a teacher, their initial enthusiasm for teaching is defeated by dull repetition.

This is especially true of educators in low income communities. Motivating educators in low income communities would have the most social impact. The government of India operates about 700,000 schools employing about 3.5 million teachers. The NGO Pratham employs about 100,000 teachers.

Firefish, partnered with Pratham to build a social networking platform for educators. The platform initially targeted Pratham's community of 100,000 teachers and subsequently was opened to the larger community of educators. The platform had all the latest features present in any social networking portal and additionally allowed participants to communicate in local language and via text messaging to account for preferences in India.

All of Pratham's internet enabled teachers registered on the portal and a proportion of them used the platform actively. Subsequently, Firefish offered many other products and services to those registered on the platform.

English language training over mobile phones - with NGO Pratham

English language skills are considered the pathway to a better life in India due, in part, to perceptions created by the booming outsourcing industry which requires skilled English speakers. Most urban high-paying jobs too require English. As a result, those servicing workers in the urban high-paying jobs are forced to interact with them in English to an extent. Hence, there is a very big demand to learn English since a majority of lower income Indians do not speak the language fluently.

Firefish, along with Pratham NGO, has developed an innovative mobile phone based English language learning product. Along with a leading telecom provider in India, this product is to be launched later this year. Subscribers can log into this service, navigate to the appropriate lesson, listen to a 2 minute segment, use the IVR system to respond and receive basic feedback.

In the initial pilot, about 10,000 subscribers are expected. Based on the success of the pilot, the product will be rolled out nationwide.
